Relationship Toolkit - Parental Conflict

This full day course is aimed at all professionals who are working with families where parental conflict is present. There is strong evidence that conflict between parents – whether together or separated – can have a significant negative impact on children’s mental health and long-term life chances. Not all conflict is damaging, but where this is frequent, intense, and poorly resolved it can harm children’s outcomes. The Pan Lancashire Relationship Toolkit has been developed to give practitioners the confidence to have conversations with couples about their relationship knowing that it is not your job to be fixing but to be sharing knowledge that gives families the tools they need to make their relationship healthier. Aims The aims of the course include: • To bring into focus the impact of parental conflict on child development and outcomes and how to recognise the signs of parental conflict at the early stages. • Support practitioners in supporting parents in finding constructive outcomes which are shown to provide positive lessons for children to learn such skills as negotiation and compromise. • Focus on practising the skills of handling conversations with parents (who are in conflict) using tools and techniques to enable parents to resolve destructive conflict with positive outcomes. Objectives At the end of the course participants will be able to: • Recognise/know the difference/s between parental conflict and domestic abuse. • Use the tools in the Pan-Lancashire Relationship Toolkit and know which may work best for different situations/in conjunction with one another to best suit different situations for couples.
